Included Competency

The Included Competency activity allows you to link units which share competency criteria, so that when one unit is completed, any 'included competency' units will automatically appear as linked units on student certificates. Students do not see Included competency units in their student portal.

For example: When set up as included competencies, the student will complete the First Aid unit and the other two units will also display on their certificate. The front page of the student's certificate will look like this:

How to set up Included Competency

Create a Non-VET (not nationally recognised) Course

Create a new course. This is your course shell, and it will hold both the main unit (which contains the learning activities), as well as any included competency units.

Ensure that it is set as Non-VET course, and configure it to suit your preferences.

For example, if you are wanting students who are completing a first aid unit to also be acknowledged that they have met requirements for CPR unit and Basic Emergency Life Support unit you will be creating a COURSE to hold the three relevant units.

For more detail see the help section on courses.

Create Included Competency Unit/s

Create a new unit/s. This will be the included competency version of the unit/s that should also be awarded when the student completes the main unit. Ensure these are configured as VET units, and that you have provided a recognised title and recognised code for each unit.

It will be helpful add an internal title or reference for this unit as Included Competency or IC, especially if you also offer these units for standard delivery AS WELL as included competency.

For more detail on how to create a unit, see the the help section on units.

Add an Included Competency activity

Follow steps 1 - 5 as outlined on the help page for how to create an activity.

DO NOT include any other activities for this unit.

The included competency can be the only activity in order to function properly. If you will also deliver this unit with learning activities, you will need to create a separate version of the unit.

Apply units to your course

Returning to your COURSE, apply both the unit which will be delivered, as well as any included company units by clicking apply existing and selecting the relevant units from the list of created units.

Workflow for Included Competency Activity

  1. Student completes the unit requirements
  2. Where this unit is set up within a course, with other unit/s that have an included competency activity the student is automatically recognised on their certificate as achieving those included competencies

Student Progress Tracker

Any Included Competency units are visible in the student progress tracker when they are enrolled into a course containing included competency units.

The unit status symbol is a present, signifying that the student is gifted that unit on completion of the main unit.

Refer below for an example:

Included Competency - Special Considerations

  • Included Competencies are granted when you achieve the other unit/s in the course - they can't be resulted directly. Their sole function is to display on the certificate front page.
  • Included Competencies are ignored for reporting and are never included in any reporting data - no need to attribute a status, hours or start/end dates to them. They also do not contribute to the unit count

For Included Competency to work correctly, the following conditions must be met. If any of these conditions aren't configured correctly, the certificate for the course will only show the course name, and will not included the names of the units.

  • All of the units (if they are VET units) should have a recognised title and a recognised code set. The text listed in these fields will be included on the certificate. For non-VET units, only the unit title will display on the certificate.
  • Each Included Competency unit must only contain 1 curriculum activity (the Included Competency activity). If you offer the unit as an included competency as well as a stand alone unit which requires students to complete activities, you will need to create two versions of the unit.

  • This Included Competency activity must be added into the default pathway for each Included Competency unit.
