The Exam (Online) requires a student to complete an online exam which has been built in Vasto.
Vasto exams can include auto-assessed questions such as multiple choice or fill in the blanks, and manually-assessed questions such as written response and file uploads which must be assessed by a human assessor.
How to Set Up an Exam (Online) Activity
- Follow steps 1 - 4 as outlined on the create an activity help page
-
Passing grade is crucial to the function of exam grading. The passing grade as defined on the specs tab of the Exam (Online) activity MUST be an exact match for the passing grade which is defined in the exam structure.
If these are not an exact match, there may be problems where students are graded as passing an exam which they have not yet met the passing grade for.
To assist in identifying such inconsistencies, the troubleshooter tool (Courses > Troubleshooter) will itemise any such cases where the passing grade of the exam does not match the passing grade of the activity to which it is applied. - Link the Vasto-produced exam in the resources tab.
This is best done when an exam is already created. Refer help section about exams for more information.
- Select the exam you want to attach from the drop down menu.
- Alternatively, you can add a new exam shell by populating a title/subtitle and clicking the add button. (This will not contain any content, you will need to go back and build the exam later)
- Select the exam you want to attach from the drop down menu.
- Save your changes
NOTE: If an exam has not been applied to the exam activity in the resources tab per step three above, the student will not be able to click a 'start' button for the exam, they will see a message advising 'coming soon'.
Exam (Online) Activity Workflow
- Student logs into their portal and completes the exam
- If it is entirely auto-assessed, when they meet the passing grade they will be marked at complete, and the exam will lock
- If the exam has written questions or file submission responses these are directed to the assessor portal. The student can edit their response at any time while awaiting assessment
- The assessor receives a notification in their submission list that there is new response to grade
- If the answer is not sufficient, assessor returns the question to student for another attempt
- Student continues to answer returned questions as required
- When the student has answered enough questions correctly that they have met the passing grade they will be marked at complete, and the exam will lock
- If after multiple attempts at a question the student is unable to answer correctly, the assessor will mark the question as not satisfactory. If the student do not meet the passing grade for the exam, they will be marked as failing that exam.
