The LTI Tool activity is used to link learning content and/or assessment content from a 3rd party LTI-compliant system - such as Moodle, Canvas or Blackboard.
Students will launch the content from a button in their Vasto student portal, and complete the content which is hosted externally by the 3rd party. Progress and result data is sent back to Vasto to update the activity outcome.
How to Set Up an LTI Tool Activity
- Follow steps 1 - 4 as outlined on the create an activity help page
- Link or upload resources (optional). This may include reading material, detailed PDF instructions or other documents the student will require to help them navigate and complete the content which the LTI Tool is linking them to.
Before you have saved the activity, you have the opportunity to provide external links
Once the activity has been saved, you will instead have the opportunity to attach files
- Provide instructions in the notes tab (optional).
The notes tab allows you to populate instructions which are visible in the student portal. This might include information which will help them navigate and complete the content which the LTI Tool is linking them to.
- Configure the LTI tab. First, you must save the activity.
- Configure the LTI tab. Once the LTI Tool activity has been saved, you can now populate the required information in the LTI Tool tab.
- CARTRIDGE URL - a web address, typically ending with .xml (eg. www.google.com/1234.xml). While most providers utilise this, if you do not have one leave this blank
- LAUNCH URL - a web address, directs the student to the learning content to be completed externally
- CONSUMER SECRET - a unique code
-
CONSUMER KEY - similar to a password. Not required for all LTI content links, if you do not have a key leave this blank
No Locking - enable this setting if a student should always have access to this content, regardless of whether they have completed it.
- Save your changes
LTI Tool Activity Workflow
- Student logs into the student portal, and opens the LTI Tool Activity
- Student completes the linked content as required
- Progress and final results are synced from the 3rd party platform and updated live in Vasto
- Once the content is completed, the LTI Tool activity is marked as completed in Vasto
Moodle Configuration for linking with Vasto LTI Tool
A significant consideration for using LTI connection to Moodle is that students cannot complete the same Moodle content multiple times. Once the Moodle content has been completed, subsequent enrolments into that training will pull the previously attained grades. This is consequential for training which is completed multiple times, such as CPR training completed every 12 months.
Below are the account settings you will need to enable when logged into Moodle so you can successfully integrate with Vasto, using the LTI Tool activity.
-
Enable "Publish as LTI tool" at account level
An administrator can enable the 'Publish as LTI tool' for use across the site:- Go to Site administration > Plugins > Authentication > Manage authentication and enable LTI by clicking the eye icon
- Go to Site administration > Plugins > Enrolments > Manage enrol plugins and enable 'Publish as LTI tool' by clicking the eye icon.
- It is recommended that the site administration setting 'Allow frame embedding' is enabled (Site Administration > Security > HTTP security) so that tools are displayed within a frame rather than in a new window
-
Configure publish sync settings
- Go to site administration > server > tasks > scheduled tasks
- Click the cog wheel icon next to "Publish as LTI tool grade sync" and "Publish as LTI tool users sync".
- Set both of these to show an asterisk (*) only in the minute, hour, day, month, day of the week fields
-
Sharing access to a course or activity
- Go to the Enrolment methods page and add 'Publish as LTI tool' as an enrolment method
- In 'Tool to be published' select the course or activity to be shared
- Click the 'Add method' button
- Go to Course Administration > Published as LTI tools page (/enrol/lti/index.php?courseid=n) and make a note of the launch details.
- You will need to copy the values of the CARTRIDGE URL, SECRET and LAUNCH URL into Vasto
