Implementing LLN Requirements in Vasto

Have more questions? Submit a request

As of July 1st 2025, the new RTO Standards require that students have their Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills reviewed prior to commencing training. There is also a secondary test available that can be used to determine if a student is adequately prepared to undertake digital learning.

To address these requirements, Vasto has implemented an integration with LLN Robot that allows for students to have their LLN skills assessed prior to accepting an enrolment (or even accepting payment for that enrolment, technically speaking).

If you'd like to make use of this functionality, please contact Vasto Support by sending an email to help@vastosoft.com so that we can enable this optional workflow for you to use.

Please note that this article addresses how to configure the LLN for your courses and units. If you'd like a look at how the LLN process itself works, please consult our article on what changes when LLN Requirements are activated.

Configuring LLN / Digital assessment

The LLN and digital assessment must be configured at an individual course / unit level. To configure and enable this option, navigate to the Course / Unit specifications page and look for the "LLN Requirements" option on the left side of the page (found above the "Learning Timeframes" section). Enabling this option will reveal a number of options;

Digital Capability (Course Ready) Assessment: If you'd like ensure a student has the skills necessary to participate in an online course, you can enable this option. This is an entirely separate quiz to the LLN Assessment, but if enabled, students will need to complete both quizzes before they are allowed to proceed.

LLN Assessment Level: You must specify which of the LLN Assessment Levels shown below meets the level required for the course/unit you are configuring;

If you're not sure which option applies to your course/unit, we recommend reviewing this LLN Robot article.

Required ACSF Levels by Domain: You must select specific levels for each of the separate domains using the five drop-down menus underneath. This selections determines the pass/fail requirements for students undertaking the LLN assessment in this course/unit. If you have any queries about what domain levels are appropriate, you can click the View LLNQ-ACSF Mapping Guide link to view the appropriate documentation.

Note that these LLN details only need to be configured for courses/units that require LLN assessment, and are being directly enrolled into. For example; if you're offering a course consisting of four units, you only need to set up the LLN for the course itself and not the units themselves - unless you're also separately enrolling students directly into the unit(s) themselves.

LLN-enabled workflow

Now that some level of LLN has been enabled for the course/unit, it is important to note the differences in how the student enrolment process will change. One of the largest differences is that according to the RTO Standards, organisations are not to take payment for an enrolment until after the student's LLND skills have been assessed.

This means, for any courses and units where LLN Requirements have been enabled, that there is a change to the self-enrolment workflow. If you have a timetable configured to require payment upfront, but the course/unit has LLN enabled, then payment will no longer be required upfront; instead, students will be enrolled into the course/unit and presented with their LLN assessment via their Student Portal. After this assessment has been conducted, they will then have a Payment Request issued. Following that, as per usual, the student will need to provide payment before they are allowed to access the entirety of their course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the LLN workflow be modified to allow us to take payments prior to enrolment, and then conduct LLN assessment afterwards?

No, this is not possible with Vasto's integrated LLN offering. If you'd still like to accept payment prior to LLN assessment being conducted, we recommend that you create an LLN unit with all the necessary assessments configured manually and then include that in all relevant courses.

What happens if a student does not pass their LLN Assessment?

They will not be allowed to enrol in their course/unit, and your Admin users will be notified via their Dashboard. Admins, assessors and trainers can also authorise a secondary attempt and/or override the automated grade to allow the student to proceed.

Can we set LLN configurations in bulk?

No, each course/unit has its own separate LLN settings, as LLN requirements can be very different between different offerings. These will all need to be configured one by one. You could also consider utilising Enhanced Enrolment Procedures to gather LLN information prior to finalising acceptance of the student's enrolment.
