What is an Orphaned Unit?
A unit becomes orphaned when a student has been switched out of a timetable for a course which contained said unit, into a timetable for a different course which does NOT contain that same unit.
As there is no equivalent unit to match the results to on the new enrolment, the unit results become orphaned.
Where to find orphaned units?
Orphan units appear in the progress tracker, at the bottom of the unit list (below the units which are part of the current enrolment).
Orphaned units are sorted by unit code for convenience and are shaded in purple to clearly differentiate them from the core and elective units for the live enrolment.
What conditions does an orphaned unit result show?
As described above, a unit becomes orphaned when a student has been switched out of a timetable for a course which contained said unit, into a timetable for a different course which does NOT contain that same unit.
Before the student was switched, if the student had achieved a unit status other than 'new' indicating that progress has been made on that unit - eg. competency achieved, in progress, RPL - then an orphaned unit result will be displayed.
An orphaned unit result will not be created;
- if the unit status was 'new' for units that were part of the previous course/timetable
- if a different unit (ie. different unit ID) with the same unit code is part of the current course/timetable enrolment and it has results against it
Fix or Remove an Orphaned Unit
To make the orphan unit show as a regular unit included in the student enrolment, the orphaned unit should be added to the course. (Keep in mind, this would affect ALL students and be added to their course enrolment).
If it has been replaced by another version of the same unit in the course (with different unit ID), best practise is to transpose any start date/end date/outcome recorded on the orphaned unit to the live unit equivalent. See 'progress tracker - units and activities' for detail on how to do this.
Question: Do orphaned units show on AVETMISS reporting?
No, they are not included in NAT files generated for AVETMISS reporting. They are not part of the stduent's active enrolment.
