After you have created a course and the unit/s have been added, you need to define whether the units are compulsory core units, which are elective units, and how many elective units need to be completed.
If you are creating a nationally recognised course, the status will already be imported as per the core or elective status outlined on www.training.gov.au
Where the tick box next to the unit is selected with a blue tick, this indicates the unit is a core unit.
Where the tick box next to the unit is left blank and is NOT selected, this indicates the unit is an elective unit.
Define how many elective units are required to be completed
Where a course has elective units, you need to define how many of these a student needs to complete, so that they complete the course requirements.
Populate the number of elective units in the box highlighted below.
Define which elective units a student can complete
If a course has more elective units available than the number of required electives, by default a student will see all units in their student portal and can select which ones they want to complete.
eg. A course may contain eight elective units, with a student needing to complete four elective units in order to complete the course. A student will be able to see all eight units, and should complete the four of their choice from the eight available.
If you would like to pre-select these units for a student so they do not get to choose units themselves but have a pre-determined selection which they need to complete, this can be done at timetable level. See help page on timetabling elective units for further information
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: I am using clustered learning, how do I set core/elective when units are clustered?
Answer: The cluster container which holds the learning activities will dictate the status for ALL units within the cluster. If this unit is core then it must be completed (therefore all the units within the cluster must be completed) to finish the course. No need to set the cream colour cluster units as core - this will not register.
