This page will review each of the seven setup areas in the exam structure. Mandatory fields which must be populated include title, passing grade and creating a minimum of one section.
1. Edit Title/Subtitle/Internal Reference
Populate the exam titles.
- The title will be already populated, as you must provide a title to create a new exam.
You can edit this as required, and it is visible to students in student portal - Provide a Sub-Title (optional). This is also visible to students in student portal
- Provide a unique admin descriptor (optional). This is not visible to students, it is intended as an additional searchable field to assist admin users in distinguishing between multiple exams which may potentially have the same title and sub-title. For example, if there are updated versions of the exam, to label these as such - version 1, version 2, etc.
2. Introductory Text
Populate introductory text for the exam. Text entered here will be displayed to the student in their student portal before the student navigates to the first question within the exam.
This might include information on expected or enforced exam duration, passing grade required, knowledge areas that will be assessed, etc.
3. Add Up-front Learning Material
Upload or attach learning materials which will be available to the student (along with the introductory text) before they navigate to the first question within the exam.
For example, you might include a review document or final notes - or simply attach resources which they might have been provided to them elsewhere for easy access to use as reference when completing the exam.
- Click Choose file to browse for and upload a new file or attach a file already uploaded to your file manager
- After it is uploaded/attached, you will see the file appear in the learning materials list
- You can Download, Edit or Delete the uploaded resource using the buttons pictured below
4. Completion Text
Customise the on-screen text a student receives when they complete the exam including a different option for successful completion versus an unsuccessful attempt.
5. Sections
Create exam sections. Each exam requires a minimum of one section, and the section is where the questions are located.
- To add a new section type a title into the text box, and click the button to add
- To delete a section click the cross icon
- To edit or view a section, click the pen and paper icon
- To change the order of sections, hover you mouse over the section you wish to move. The cursor will show a vertical arrow, and you can now click and drag-and-drop the section up or down the list
The section functionality is designed to break down a larger exam into topic areas, or smaller and more manageable chunks so the student has a sense of moving forwards within the exam.
eg. rather than creating one section with one hundred questions, create ten sections which each have ten questions. This will give a student a sense of completing a block of questions, and making progress.
These may also be ten questions in a section on a particular knowledge area or topic. For example, the first section might be called 'Chapter 1 Knowledge' and contain ten questions based on content from chapter one of the text book.
6. Question Server
Control how the questions are presented and delivered to students;
- Question order - random or set order
- Passing grade - what percentage of correct responses are required to pass.
This passing grade at exam level should match with the passing grade stipulated at activity level. See Exam (Online) help page for more information. - Unsuccessful completion of auto-assessed exam
Retake entire exam, retake failed questions only, retake entire section/s the failed question/s sit within
8. Advanced Options
Advanced settings exist to disable select exam functionality, or impose a time limit on completing the exam.
If a time limit is enabled, the student will see the total allocated time when they open the exam, and will have an on-screen count down timer. They have one attempt at completing the exam within the designated time.
If a student requires another attempt (ie. due to technical issues) use admin grading to manually over ride the first attempt results, which will allow for the student to make a subsequent attempt.
